Finding the Right Murakami Emulsion
Ink emulsions are very important for making prints. Before you can make a workable stencil, there are many factors that need to be considered, including the application of ink emulsions. While there are a variety of Murakami Emulsions you can choose from, not every emulsion will work for your application. In order to find the right Murakami Emulsion for your project, you must decide on which type works for you. Murakami offers Pure Photopolymer, Dual Core, and Diazo emulsion options.
Pure photopolymers
Murakami Pure Photopolymer Emulsions, also known as PVA/SBQ pure photopolymer emulsions are helpful for many print jobs. The SBQ emulsion exposes faster, forms detailed prints, and is capable of surviving in storage at high temperatures (up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.) Pure photopolymers are noted for their ability to develop and dry quickly, and are great for printing on certain textiles, such as denim. The shelf life of pure photopolymers run for around one year, and are a suitable choice for screen printing.
Dual Core Emulsions:
Murakami Dual core emulsions combine elements of pure (SBQ) emulsions and diazo emulsions. Dual core emulsions are known for their wide-latitude exposure; a well made stencil is more easily made using dual core emulsions. Dual core emulsions are also usable with ink systems that are hot solvent inks, or co-solvent inks where solvent and water resistance is necessary. Unlike pure photopolymers, dual core emulsions require far more care; they must be stored in an 80 degree Fahrenheit environment, and its shelf life is at most 6 weeks (sometimes as little as 4 weeks.)
Diazo Emulsions
Murakami Diazo emulsions work well, even when applied during stressful, high-intensity print jobs. The resolution offered by diazo emulsions is very exceptional, and the ink is quite durable as well. However, it should be noted that diazo inks take longer to develop than the other types, meaning diazo emulsions may not be the most ideal, depending on the quality of light in the printing environment.
Even in a place with little lighting, diazo emulsions will still get the job done. Diazo emulsions change color while they are developing, meaning you have plenty of time to double check your work. Diazo emulsions are identical to dual-core emulsions in terms of storage; they are best kept at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and they last anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks.
