Qualities of an Automatic Screen Coating Machine:

Save Time
Most automated screen coaters can coat hundreds of screens in a regular work day. Saving you manual labor and production time. Certain machines will also have settings features, allowing you to quickly jump back into a job without having to program your desired results.

Consistent Coating
Because this is an automated screen coating machine, the precision on which it coats is nearly the same every time. This will provide you with consistent results and a better production rate.

Frame Adaptability
Specially designed troughs on your automated screen coating machine allow for a range of thicknesses across multiple screen mesh counts, and allows for quick exchange between screens. Certain models also include tool-free frame adjustments for a range of frame sizes.
2 Ways to Coat Screens with Emulsion
Manual Coating
1. Proper Use of Your Scoop Coater
Every scoop coater has two sides. One has a sharp edge and the other a rounded. A sharp edge allows for less emulsion to be laid down, great for high detailed prints and high screen mesh. The other side, the rounded edge, helps to simply lay more emulsion, best for lower mesh count screens.
2. Coat the Inside of the Screen First
First, coat the inside of your screen and the outside last. This technique helps to look the emulsion and screen, allowing for a stronger stencil.
3. Apply Your Emulsion by Hand
Next, you’ll place your coater against your screen, about an inch from the bottom of the frame. Slide the emulsion up the frame with medium pressure using a coater. Stop at about one inch from the top of the frame. When using a coater, lift it from the screen and tilt it so the emulsion falls back into the coater. Use a sawing motion to get a clean edge. Then turn the screen around, flip it upside down and coat once again.

Automated Coating
- Program your Automated Screen Coating Machines to the number of coats you want for application.
- Depending on your model, place the recommended amount of emulsion in the coater. Some automated screen coating machines have front and rear coaters, so if you would like to coat both sides in tandem or independently, you can choose to do so in the machine settings.
- Place your Screen in the frame holder (some frame holders can adapt to multiple screen sizes).
- Close the clamps to help keep the screen from moving and to produce consistent results when coating.
- Press the start button and let the screen coating machine automatically coat your screen. Within a matter of seconds or up to a minute, you’ll have a fully coated screen ready for the next step in the screen printing process.
Biggest Differences
Manually coating and automatically coating your screens can have huge differences:
- Automated screen coaters will have better precision and less wait time. Manually applying your emulsion to multiple screens can become time consuming and produce different results. Anything produce by hand will have unique results and possibly imperfects compared to an automated, machine generated coat.
- Less physical labor goes into using an automated screen coater.

Automated Screen Coating Machines FAQ
Can I Reduce Pinholes With an Automated Screen Coater?
One of the biggest problems with coating emulsion on a screen is coating too fast which results with more pinholes. This is because of the air bubbles that pop open during the drying process. The coarser mesh count you have, the more of a problem this will be. On average, manual coating will be around 6-7 seconds, while an automatic coater (depending on the model) could coat around 10-12 seconds. Slower coating means lesser pinholes.
Does An Automated Screen Coater Speed Up the Coating Process?
Technically (as we’ve stated above) the automated screen coater will work a few seconds slower than manual coating, but that’s a good thing. You don’t want to rush coating your emulsion. It also takes manual labor out of the equation and less time worrying about how the emulsion was coated.
How Many Screens Can Be Coated In a Day’s Work with an Automated Screen Coating Machine?
Depending on the model you choose and the manufacturer’s notes, you can produce far more than you would manually. M&R’s Uni-Cote has been recorded as coating up to 400 screens within an 8 hour work day. This all depends on the type of screen, size of the screen and how many you need to get done within a day. Automated screen coaters are helpful for larger shops or smaller shops with a big budget.
Does the Automated Screen Coater Take Up a Lot of Space?
Automated Screen Coaters have a large footprint, so it’s best to have room in your shop for one. They are a luxury item that can increase your efficiency in your screen printing shop but they aren’t a necessity. If you are considering buying one, think about where you can place one in your shop and if you have the need for it.
